When do the horseback fishers go out into the sea?

What are the best months to go shrimp fishing?
Eddy D’Hulster: “The catching season usually starts in the middle of March or early April and runs to the end of June. The water is too hot in summer. We get back into the saddle from mid-September to mid-December. I think that October’s the best month, but it’s certainly not a precise science. (laughs)”
Nele Bekaert: “October and November are really the best months, but May isn’t bad either.” Actually, we go fishing throughout the year. Except when it’s freezing outside. Then it's too slippery for our horses and a bit too cold for us too. (laughs)”

Outside the summer months, the shrimp fishermen on horseback may also be spotted at Sint-André and Groenendijk.
